The primary function of a garden parasol is to protect from harmful UV rays. Understanding the different UV protection ratings and what they mean is important. All parasols offer protection from the sun however not every parasol protects against damaging UV rays. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, it is used to describe the effectiveness of sun-protective fabrics. Our parasols are rated 30+, 35 or 50. Parasols rated 30-35 fall under the category of very good UV protection and block out around 96% - 97.4% of harmful UV rays. Whereas a UPF rating of 50 stands for excellent UV protection and means that 98% of harmful UV rays will be blocked. We would advise going for parasols with any of the above mentioned UPF ratings - these are sure to protect you and your loved ones from damaging sun rays. Premium fabrics such as Spuncrylic offer optimum protection and colourfastness. This is because Spuncryclic is solution-dyed, meaning the colour is present at the core. Fabrics that are not solution-dyed have a white core, when exposed to the sun eventually the white core will become visible. Premium fabrics have their perks but there is nothing wrong with standard fabrics such as polyester. When browsing table parasols, polyester is a very common material. Good quality polyester has great colourfastness and UV protection. Stability is crucial for any garden parasol, especially in breezy conditions. Choosing a suitable base is the finishing touch to your parasol, it contributes to the overall stability and look of your parasol. Normally centre pole parasols go within a dining table, many garden dining tables come with a parasol hole. The dining table helps keep the table parasol secure as they are more susceptible to falling over in the wind than cantilever parasols. However, if you do not want to put your parasol within your outdoor dining table we would recommend using a heavy granite base rather than a plastic base.
